GAME SCIENCE and FISHBON BREATHLESS

OK, you know you've always wanted to be part of a scientific experiment..so here's your big chance. Tonight we'll be testing Randy's Tactile Motion Effects System (translate: motion actuators that vibrate along with audio from an action video sequence). Long time Event Lab enthusiasts may remember when he brought his rigged up Harley to Helena St.

Here's how it works. We'll attach an actuator pad to each of the four legs of 6 chairs in the Pescadrome. Then we'll ask six people to sit in them and attach Alan's biofeedback sensors to their fingers. To be sure the system is really working we'll also attach sensors to six other experiment-ees sitting on chairs with no actuators. Then we'll turn the lights down and show a cool action scene. The chairs vibrate and you feel like you're in the scene. Or at least that's what the experiment is about.* The sensors will collect data so we'll be able to find out for sure. Don't miss this. Later in the evening we'll talk about how to get involved in Fishbon Breathless, our full-scale August event.

So bring libations and join us at the Fishbon Pescadrome, 101 S. Quarantina in Santa Barbara.

Info: 805-453-5246

or check out the blog at http://www.fishboneventlab.blogspot.com/

*Scientific Explanation We will record average electrodermal activity levels in two groups of people, with only one group experiencing tactile motion effects. We will compare results from the two groups in real-time as they perceive the identical audio-visual presentation.

DOC NITERS>>>>>>>>>>

sorry to do this with such late notice....i just found out about this event.  There is a preview of a what looks to be a very cool film, KING CORN , showing at the Faulkner gallery at 6:30 tonite.  I don't like to do this switch up so last minute but rather than compete with this event, i think we should support it.  Please read below for more info.  We'll be back on track July 2 at the Pescadrome.

thanks,
Renée

Friends,

Next Monday night (JUNE 18, 6:30 PM), please join me, Slow Food Santa Barbara, the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders group, and Soujourner Cafe for an evening of discussion about food, farming, and how policy shapes what's in our stores and in our bodies.  The main event is a great documentary that is not even out yet. --> http://kingcorn.net/about.html

Program:

  1. Intro, mind-blowing food facts, context, and prizes
  2. FEATURE PRESENTATION: King Corn, a brand-new feature-length documentary from Mosaic Films, Inc.  This film should be a hit.  We have special permission from the filmmakers to show it pre-release to a community audience!  It is really awesome, not preachy, just really interesting, educational, and well done.  Great original soundtrack too!  If you liked Micheal Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, this is very much in the same vein.
  3. Followed by a discussion led by UCSB professors David Cleveland and Daniela Soleri.
Seating is limited, so be prompt.  Please pass this on to anyone else you know who is interested in learning more and contributing to a discussion about our food system! Contact me with any questions-- I really hope to see you there!

Tonight will be a special treat. Anne-Marie from UCSB MAT program will be bringing her amazing wearable Vacuole Robes and you get to try them. So, what's a Vacuole Robe*? Interactive full-body music instrument? Fashion? Exercise tool? Immersive straight jacket? Please come and try them on and help her define what you think they are. Later in the evening Jim will be showing G-Force, a primo visualizer app that syncs graphic to audio (better than anything else out there..except for Wesley, Lance and Graham's custom apps). So bring libations and join us at the Fishbon Pescadrome, 101 S. Quarantina St. in Santa Barbara. Info: 805-453-5246 or check out the blog at http://www.fishboneventlab.blogspot.com/

*More info: The Vacuole Robes" are named after the membranes that surround and protect a cell - here's a list of what a vacuole does: In general, vacuole functions include: Removing unwanted structural debris, isolating materials that might be harmful or a threat to the cell, containing waste products, maintaining internal hydrostatic pressure or turgor within the cell, maintaining an acidic internal pH, containing small molecules, exporting unwanted substances from the cell, enabling the cell to change shape."

I'm very pleased to announce a special Chi Gong workshop on Tuesday
June 26, with guest instructor Scott.  6:30 to about 8:00, 101 S
Quarentina - Same Kung Fu time, same Fishbon place.

Scott is a very insightful and skilled person with 15 years of Chinese
martial arts experience.  He will be sharing some basics from his
daily practice.  This should be really interesting and potentially
quite blissful.

Scott says:
I'll cover basic yet powerful chi gong practices.  The focus will
primarily be chi circulation and cultivation, but I'll throw in some martial
applications as well.  It will be fun.  The syllabus will look something
like this:

  • Heavenly Circuit Chi Gong (Zhou Tian Gong)
  • Both small and large circuit
  • Stump Standing Chi Gong (Zhan Zhuang Gong)
  • Wu Chi Meditation
  • Iron Shirt Chi Gong
  • Bone Packing
  • Emitting Chi (Wai Chi)

Please bring at least a $5 donation for this special event.
